আমরা যাদবপুরের প্রাক্তন ছাত্র(ছাত্রী)রা ragging এ জড়িত ঘটনার ফলে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম বর্ষের এক ছাত্রের মৃত্যুতে মর্মাহত | আমরা এই ঘটনার দ্রুত তদন্ত ও দোষীদের কড়া শাস্তির আশা করি। তার সঙ্গে, যাদবপুর ক্যাম্পাস ও হোস্টেলে সমস্ত প্রকার ragging এর প্রতি ছাত্রছাত্রীদের zero tolerance মনোভাব নেওয়ার আবেদন জানাই।

আমার বিভিন্ন সময় যাদবপুর থেকে পাস করেছি, কেউ ২০০৭, কেউ ২০১০ কেউ ২০১৫, ইত্যাদি। ছাত্র থাকাকালীন আমরা পড়াশুনা ছাড়াও অনেক আনুসঙ্গিক কাজকর্মে অংশ নিয়েছি – আমরা কেউ সংস্কৃতি organize করেছি, কেউ ফটোগ্রাফি ক্লাবে ছিলাম, কেউ কেউ যাদব্পুরের ক্যাম্পাস এ রাজনীতিতে অংশ নিয়েছি | এটা আমাদের সকলের ব্যর্থতা যে আমরা ছাত্রছাত্রী থাকাকালীন আরো আন্তরিকভাবে, দৃঢ় ভাবে ragging culture এর বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়াইনি| অনেক ক্ষেত্রে হয়তো এই গভীর সমস্যাটা এড়িয়ে গেছি বা হয়তো দেখেও না দেখার ভান করেছি। পরোক্ষ ভাবে হলেও আমরা এই culture কে প্রশ্রয় দিয়েছি।

আজ এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনার দায় তাই কতৃপক্ষ, বর্তমান ছাত্রছাত্রীদের সাথে খানিকটা আমাদেরও। আমরা বিশ্বাস করি যে এই নেগেটিভ কালচারের পরিবর্তন ঘটবে বর্তমান ছাত্রছাত্রীদের হাত ধরেই। সাংবাদিকতার নামে যারা ক্যাম্পাসের নর্দমায় ভাঙ্গা বোতল খুঁজে বেড়াচ্ছে, তাদের হাতে নয়। 

এই সমস্যা মোকাবিলার কিছু প্রাথমিক চিন্তা ভাবনা আমদের রয়েছে, যা আমরা ছাত্র, শিক্ষক, কতৃপক্ষর কাছে ক্রমশ নিয়ে গিয়ে একটা ইতিবাচক আলোচনা শুরু করতে চাই। উদাহরণ হিসেবে আমরা ভাবছি একটা buddy program চালু করা যায় কিনা, পাস-আউট সিনিয়ার দাদা দিদিদের সঙ্গে একক কথা বলার বা সমস্যা ভাগ করার একটা প্লাটফর্ম দেওয়া যায় কিনা প্রথম বছরের ছাত্রীদের। এরকম আরো অনেক চিন্তা ভাবনা নিয়ে আমরা আগামী দিনে আলোচনা করতে চাই।

আমরা মনে করি, উপযুক্ত সহায়তা পেলে, যাদবপুরের ছাত্রছাত্রীরা ঘুরে দাঁড়াবে, এই ragging culture এর শেষ দেখে ছাড়বে। তাদের প্রতি আমাদের সম্পূর্ন সমর্থন রইল, তাদের সাথে সব রকম সহযোগিতা করতে আমরা প্রস্তুত।

We, the former students of Jadavpur University, are shocked and deeply saddened by a student’s recent ragging-related death. We do not have the appropriate words to empathize with the family. We wish for a speedy investigation and a proper sentencing of the perpetrators. Additionally, we appeal to all the present students of the University to unequivocally take a zero-tolerance approach towards ragging within the campus or in the hostels.

We graduated from the University in various years. While we were students, we participated in various co-curricular activities. Some of us organized Sanskriti; some were involved in photography or mountaineering clubs. Some of us were involved in student politics. It is our failure that we couldn’t counter ragging effectively as students. At times, we wrongly ignored it. Although sometimes, we prevented it, at other times, we thought it was not that big of a deal. Even if unintentionally, we may have enabled the ragging culture. Thus, alongside the administration and the current students, the burden of today’s tragic incident lies somewhat with us.

We believe that positive change will come from within the current students and not from the “journalists” busy searching for broken bottles in the gutters of the campus.

We have some preliminary thoughts and thoughts about countering ragging. For example, we are discussing if we can start a “buddy” program – a platform for freshers to interact with the alumni. We intend to start a dialogue with other similar ideas. We believe that the students will turn things around with appropriate guidance and end the ragging culture. We are willing to support any such positive initiative and look forward to cooperating with any such endeavor.
